Full Year Complementary Courses

 

Art

Student drawing

Art‌ at Kenilworth is studio based and project focused. Students conduct visual inquiry using a wide variety of media and explore art theory through personal investigation and discovery. They may use clay, plaster, tempera paint, watercolors, acrylics, ink, metal, wire, paper maché, charcoal, printing ink, etc. Students apply analytical and critical skills when responding to works of art.

 

Band

Band students

Instrumental Music‌ at Kenilworth School is designed to help students develop an understanding and appreciation of music and will assist them in the techniques of reading music, and playing their chosen instrument. Students experience a variety of in class and co-curricular activities designed to reinforce their learning. All music courses will include both the theoretical and performance aspects of music.  In grade eight and nine band, students will further develop their instrumental, theoretical and performance music skills.

 

Drama

Shakespeare week

Drama provides a fun and active opportunity to explore personal expression in a safe and supportive environment. Students work in small and large groups through various units of orientation, movement, speech, acting, and theatre studies. Students may explore a variety of activities, such as storytelling, stage fighting, script writing, lighting design and control, mime, improvisation, clowning, puppetry, mask, and scene building.

Construction

Construction

Construction provides opportunities for students to respond to a variety of challenges and demonstrate an ability for independent and collaborative work in design and construction. Goals of the course include to: develop an ability to research & lay out a design, and to plan for materials; familiarizing students with safe hand-tool and power-tool use & practice; effectively carrying out a plan of action; and safely working with others. This course will meet these objectives through a variety of projects from building birdhouses, bookshelves, benches, and beyond.

 

Film Studies

Film

Film Studies provides students the opportunity to study film as an art and industry. Students will view selections from a wide range of film genres as a means of exploring the technical/theoretical aspects of film. There will be written assignments ranging from personal response to critiques, as well as projects involving the creation of short films or scenes.

 

Food Studies

Foods

Food Studies lets students experience making a variety of products, including both assignments and cooking labs in small groups. Students will learn the basics required to correctly identify kitchen equipment, read recipes, measure ingredients as well as food safety and hygiene practices. The students have input on the class menu and are challenged to reflect on their labs and how they can add their own creative flare.

 

Environmental and Outdoor Education

Compass

Environmental and Outdoor Education educates students about our world. Students will become confident and capable in making choices that improve their own health and environment. They will be put to the test in practical challenges, group work, and tasks to help them make strong decisions related to teamwork, preparation, survival, and developing responsibility toward the environment.

 

 

Learn to Lead

Learn to Lead

Learn to Lead is our Student Leadership program emphasizes student involvement in planning, managing and accessing school-wide projects. Students will be encouraged to develop citizenship, organizational and verbal skills. They will be expected to spend time planning a number of school activities during the school year and will have the opportunity to peer educate and mentor Kenilworth students. Volunteer involvement will be part of the course work.
